DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa hunters are gearing up for the 2024 pheasant season, starting with the youth-only season on October 19 and 20, followed by the regular season from October 26 to January 10.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources reports that bird populations are similar to 2022, despite a slight drop due to a wetter spring. Hunters can expect to nab between 350,000 and 400,000 roosters this year.
This season also marks the 100th anniversary of pheasant hunting in Iowa, with celebrations running through October 2025.
Pheasant populations are expected to be highest in the west central and northwest regions of the state. For hunting locations and more details, visit the Iowa DNR’s hunting atlas at iowadnr.gov/hunting.
