JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - With worsening drought conditions across Missouri, the Department of Conservation (MDC) is reminding residents that outdoor burning could easily spark wildfires.
According to the MDC, the dry and warm weather has increased the risk of fires spreading out of control, particularly from improper burning of leaves or debris.
People are urged to check with local fire departments or the National Weather Service for burn bans and Red Flag Warnings.
To prevent wildfires, MDC says you should avoiding burning during high temperatures or strong winds, keeping vehicles off tall, dry grass, and ensuring campfires are small and fully extinguished.
If a fire does start to get out of control, call 911 immediately. MDC also promotes the use of prescribed fire as a land management tool under specific environmental conditions.
Landowners can become certified in prescribed burns through online and field courses.
