JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - If you want daffodils, tulips, or blue bells in your garden next spring, now is the time to plant them.
That's according to the University of Missouri Extension Office, which says these spring-blooming bulbs need to be planted in the fall to go through the necessary chilling process over winter.
Daffodils are the best choice for Missouri’s climate, while tulips and hyacinths may require replanting after a few years.
MU Extension Office officials also advise choosing plump, healthy bulbs and preparing well-draining soil to avoid rot. The also recommends adding bone meal to help the bulbs develop a strong root system.
