JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - With recent hurricanes and fires highlighting the need for disaster preparedness, the University of Missouri Extension Office is reminding families to plan ahead.
The Office says even the Midwest faces tornadoes and floods, making preparation crucial. Officials recommend having an emergency backpack, a family communication plan, and updating it annually.
MU Extension’s Disaster Education Network offers resources to help families and communities prepare for emergencies. Key items include flashlights, bottled water, non-perishable food, and a first-aid kit.
Officials also emphasize keeping emergency contact lists and knowing how to turn off gas and utility valves. For more tips and a free disaster plan template, visit MU Extension's website.
