JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Even though it's still warm, winter is still on it's way. That's why the Missouri Department of Labor is urging residents to stay safe while working in cold weather in the coming months.
Their advice: layer up with thermal clothing, insulated pants, and coats to prevent frostbite. Symptoms of frostbite include pain, numbness, and skin discoloration.
Severe cases may cause skin to turn red, white, or even blue and may require medical attention.
The department also warns of hypothermia, marked by intense shivering and slurred speech, urging immediate emergency care if these symptoms arise.
The Department recommends keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle, including essentials like a flashlight, first-aid kit, blankets, and high-calorie snacks.
And don’t forget to stay hydrated. Dehydration can happen in the winter too, leading to dry skin and cracked lips. The American Heart Association recommends sipping water throughout the day.
