ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - A St. Joseph teenager has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for his role in the shooting death of 15-year-old Carter Smith last year.
19-year-old Jackson Lee Griffith pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in connection with the June 2023 incident. Smith's body was found near the REC Center at 28th and Commercial Streets.
Griffith is one of three suspects in the case. Another suspect, 18-year-old Teontre Kirby, has also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and is set to be sentenced soon.
The third suspect, 17-year-old Kaden Wilfong, was sentenced to 30 years in August after police found bloody clothes and guns linked to the crime at his home.
