State officials: Grape harvest arrives early in Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri’s grape harvest arrived early this year due to a low crop yield, primarily caused by spring frost, says Dean Volenberg, interim director of the University of Missouri Grape and Wine Institute.

Despite the reduced yield, Volenberg highlights that grape quality is high, promising a good vintage for 2024.

Volenberg explains that the harvest was accelerated because smaller yields mature faster, especially with the impact of secondary buds replacing those damaged by frost.

Some growers saw yields reduced by 40% to 60%, while others managed normal harvests. Notably, the Norton variety is still being harvested, with some growers achieving up to 5 tons per acre.

Looking ahead, Volenberg is hopeful for favorable conditions for next year's grape crop, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy canopy for at least six weeks after harvest. For more information, visit gwi.missouri.edu.
