JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) shows hunters harvested 1,857 turkeys during Missouri’s fall firearms turkey season, which ran from October 1-31.
Gasconade County led with 51 turkeys, followed by Osage with 48, and Cedar with 46.
Last year’s fall season saw 2,220 birds harvested, so this season’s numbers are down, which the MDC attributes to unusually warm and dry October weather affecting both turkey and hunter activity.
For hunters still interested, fall archery turkey season continues through November 15th and will reopen from November 27 to January 15.
The MDC is also asking hunters to contribute to turkey population research by sending feathers from their harvested turkeys, using postage-paid envelopes available from MDC.
