JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation is offering free classes this February on using deer fat to make tallow-based products like heel balms, candles, and firestarters.
Deer hunters are encouraged to save hard, waxy fat from their harvests to bring to the sessions.
Classes will be held at the Remington Nature Center in St. Joseph, from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on February 3, Litton Ag Center in Chillicothe from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on February 3 and the Clinton MDC office from 9 to 10:30 a.m. on February 5.
Participants will learn how to render deer fat into tallow and take home samples of their creations. Registration is required, and those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
