JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The University of Missouri Extension Office is advising home gardeners to avoid overusing fertilizer and topsoil, as too much can harm both plants and the environment.
Officials recommend a soil test to determine pH, nutrient levels, and organic matter content, allowing gardeners to apply the right amount of fertilizer based on plant needs.
Fall is a prime time for testing, especially for new lawns, established lawns every three years, and gardens every two to three years if fertilized regularly. The MU Soil and Plant Testing Lab offers tests for $15 per sample.
Samples can be mailed directly or dropped off at county MU Extension centers.
