JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Missouri ranks among the top 15 states for deer-related collisions, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
In 2023, there were 3,591 deer-involved crashes in the state, resulting in four fatalities and 420 injuries—equivalent to a deer strike every 2.5 hours.
As temperatures drop and nights grow longer, the Missouri Department of Commerce and Insurance (DCI) is urging drivers to remain alert, particularly at dawn and dusk when deer activity peaks.
The DCI advises scanning both sides of the road, slowing down if deer are spotted, and avoiding swerving to prevent loss of control.
Damage from animal collisions is covered under optional comprehensive insurance, but drivers without this coverage may bear the repair costs themselves.
If an accident occurs, prioritize safety, document the scene, and report the incident to your insurer.
