JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) says this week is National Crash Responder Safety Week, honoring first responders and remind drivers to prioritize safety on the roads.

Highway workers, police, EMS, firefighters, and tow truck operators risk their lives daily while responding to crashes and keeping traffic moving.

Traffic incidents are a leading cause of death for EMS responders and law enforcement, according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Missouri’s Move Over law requires drivers to change lanes or slow down when approaching stationary emergency vehicles with flashing lights.

In 2023, Missouri reported over 136,000 traffic crashes, with MoDOT responding to more than 6,000 incidents monthly.
