JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Effective January 1, Missouri’s Private Pesticide Applicator Training will undergo significant changes to meet new EPA requirements.
Under the updated rules, applicators will need to meet 18 competency standards, up from the current five. New licensing categories will be introduced, including soil fumigation, non-soil fumigation, and aerial application, with private applicators designated under category 20.
In addition, children under 16 can no longer apply restricted-use pesticides, though a new “Certified Provisional Applicator” license will be available for family members aged 16 or 17.
Growers can no longer supervise employees in handling restricted-use pesticides; those employees will now need separate certification.
Training will be conducted by the University of Missouri Extension Service, with a new fee structure to support pesticide safety programs. For more information, contact Wayne Flanary at the University of Missouri Extension.
