IA officials investigating the death of an inmate

CLARINDA, Iowa - Iowa officials have confirmed the death of a prisoner at the Clarinda Correctional Facility.

According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, Patrick James Smith Jr., 38, was pronounced dead at Clarinda Regional Health Center shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Smith had been serving a five-year sentence from Polk County since January 2023. The circumstances surrounding Smith's death are under investigation, and no additional details have been released at this time.
