DES MOINES, Iowa - The state of Iowa is offering grants to help communities recover from the 2020 derecho by planting trees in impacted areas.

With $250,000 available, the Community Forestry Grant Program supports state and local governments, schools, and volunteer organizations in 27 disaster-designated counties.

Grants range from $500 to $10,000 and don’t require a matching cash contribution. Funds can be used to purchase and plant trees in public areas like parks, school grounds, courthouse lawns, cemeteries, and trails.

However, state lands are not eligible. This initiative aims to restore green spaces with trees suitable for Iowa’s climate, fostering environmental and community recovery.

Applications and rules are available at iowadnr.gov/urbanforestry. The deadline to apply is Monday, March 3 at 4:30  p.m.
