DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is highlighting two ways Iowa hunters can give back.
First, the DNR is teaming up with the Food Bank of Iowa and 31 meat lockers for the 2024 "Help Us Stop Hunger" program. Hunters are urged to contact participating lockers for drop-off instructions before harvesting a deer.
Additionally, hunters can sign up for the Iowa Deer Exchange Program to donate venison directly to families in need. The program connects donors and recipients through an online database, free of charge.
Hunters can register or update their information at iowadnr.gov/deer. Meanwhile, Iowa Elks Lodges are calling on hunters to donate deer hides to the Elks Veterans Leather Program.
Last season, hunters contributed over 4,700 hides, which were used to craft gloves for veterans in wheelchairs and leather for therapy programs. Donations can be dropped off at local Elks Lodges.
