DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is set to release rainbow trout at nine locations across the state, bringing fishing opportunities to areas that can’t support trout during warmer months.
DNR officials will begin stocking on Friday, January 3. Winter trout stockings are a great chance for families to introduce kids to fishing, with some locations hosting special events to help anglers get started.
To fish for or possess trout, anglers need a valid fishing license and must pay the trout fee. The daily limit is five trout per angler, with a possession limit of 10.
Children under 15 can fish for trout with a licensed adult but share the daily limit unless the child pays the trout fee to claim their own.
The program is funded by trout fee sales, and events will depend on weather and ice conditions. For updates and a full schedule, visit the Iowa DNR Trout Fishing website.
