Iowa DNR warns residents about potential for thin ice

DES MOINES, Iowa - As arctic air grips Iowa, ice is forming on lakes and ponds across the northern two-thirds of the state, drawing ice fishing, snowmobiling, and skating enthusiasts outdoors.

However, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is urging caution as ice thickness varies and conditions can change quickly.

The DNR recommends at least four inches of clear ice for fishing and five inches for snowmobiles or ATVs. Ice formation depends on water size and depth, and obstacles like rocks or docks can weaken the ice.

Snow-covered ice also slows freezing and hides hazards. Blue ice is generally safer, while dark, slushy, or honeycombed ice should be avoided.

For safety, never go out alone, always check ice thickness, and let someone know your plans. Bring essential safety items like ice picks, a whistle, extra clothes, and a life jacket.

Snowmobilers should use caution, slow down, and avoid heavy braking on slick ice.
