JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is investigating reports of sick and dead waterfowl, including geese and ducks, across the state.

While the cause is still under review, MDC suspects highly pathogenic avian influenza, a virus also affecting neighboring states like Kansas and Iowa.

Avian influenza spreads through feces, saliva, and nasal discharges as birds migrate and interact.

While it poses no immediate public health risk, MDC urges the public to avoid touching dead birds and report any sightings of dead waterfowl online. Pet owners are advised to prevent contact between pets and dead animals.

Waterfowl hunters are encouraged to dress game birds in the field or away from other birds and to dispose of waste properly.

Additionally, hunters should ensure boats, waders, and other equipment are dry before moving between locations to reduce virus transmission.

The virus is not a threat to poultry or game meat if cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees.
