MDC offering unique way to dispose of Christmas trees

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is giving live Christmas trees a second life by using them for habitat improvement in central Missouri.

For the month of Jnauary, Missourians can drop off their real, undecorated Christmas trees at three locations, the MDC’s Central Regional Office in Columbia, Washington Park in Jefferson City, and Proctor Park in California.

Fisheries staff will submerge the trees in area lakes and ponds, creating vital underwater cover for smaller fish and aquatic life.

The MDC says the trees become “hotspots for fish and anglers” as larger fish gather to prey around these structures.

Alternatively, trees can also be dropped off at Columbia city mulch sites or placed under backyard bird feeders to provide winter cover for birds and wildlife.

For more information on Christmas tree donation, call the MDC at 573-815-7900.
