JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Conservation is recommending changes to deer carcass movement and disposal rules to combat the spread of chronic wasting disease (CWD) and simplify regulations for hunters.
The proposed changes would rescind the current intrastate carcass transportation rules, which restrict moving high-risk parts from CWD Management Zone counties unless delivered to licensed processors, taxidermists, or sampling stations.
Instead, hunters statewide could transport deer carcasses to any location in Missouri for processing, as long as unused parts are properly disposed of in a landfill, through a trash service, or on the property where the deer was harvested.
Hunters would still be required to report their deer through Telecheck before moving parts out of the harvest county. MDC says these changes aim to reduce regulatory burdens while maintaining protections against CWD.
Public comments on the proposal will be accepted from February 19 through March 20 on the MDC website.
