JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Preliminary data from the Missouri Department of Conservation shows hunters killed 11,424 deer during the state’s Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) portion of firearms deer season, held November 27 through December 1 in CWD Management Zone counties.

The total included 3,917 antlered bucks, 1,052 button bucks, and 6,455 does. The CWD portion, introduced last year, aims to increase deer harvest in designated areas to help slow the spread of the disease.

This year’s harvest is slightly down from last year’s total of 11,707 deer. Hunters were allowed to use unfilled firearms permits and adhered to county-specific antlerless limits.

Archery deer hunting continues through January 15.

The late antlerless portion of firearms deer season begins this Saturday and runs through December 15, and the alternative methods portion follows from December 28 to January 7.
