Maryville senior Alyssa Cunningham signed her letter of intent to play softball at North Iowa Area Community College next season.
Maryville High School senior Alyssa Cunningham signed her letter of intent Tuesday to continue playing softball at the collegiate level.
Cunningham, an All-MEC and All-District catcher, will join the North Iowa Area Community College Trojans next season. She said as this fall went on, she knew she wasn't ready to hang it up, and North Iowa felt like the right fit.
"It just felt most like home. I really just noticed how much the head coach connected with the girls and was involved with their lives, and it really just felt like home to me."
Alyssa, the daughter of Northwest Missouri State football assistant coach Mike Cunningham, grew up close to collegiate athletics, and the viewpoint of her father with his players factored into her decision-making.
"It put a lot into perspective," Alyssa Cunningham said. "My dad helped me through a lot of the recruiting process, gave me a lot of advice. He really had a different perspective on it that really helped a lot. Just knowing how he connects with his players and knowing that I'll have that with my coach, too, is really important to me."
Cunningham joins a program that went 33-23 last spring and produced a pair of NJCAA All-Americans.
