Northwest Athletic Trainers 5K set for Saturday

The annual Family Weekend 5K begins at 7am Saturday.

The Northwest Missouri State University Athletic Trainers 5K, a Family Weekend staple, returns Saturday morning.

The annual 5K begins on 4th Street next to Bearcat Stadium, and will take runners and walkers around the Northwest Missouri State campus.

The event always brings back alumni to campus, and the smiles and friendly faces of former student-athletes returning to their roots is always a pleasant sight for the Bearcat Sports Medicine team.

"It's never lost on me when athletes even before my time come back and still continue to support," Christy Tapps, Northwest's head athletic trainer, said. "That definitely means that we are doing something right during their time here and when we're treating them."

The run/walk is also a vital fundraiser for the group that takes care of student-athletes daily.

"All of the proceeds from this go directly to help support our staff, whether it's to be cutting edge as far as equipment or to provide continuing education for our staff."

Registration for the Northwest Athletic Trainers 5K is at 6:15am Saturday. The run/walk begins at 7am.
