John McMenamin is the 21st head football coach in Northwest history.

John McMenamin is the 21st head football coach in Northwest history.

Northwest Missouri State University athletic director Dr. Andy Peterson announced McMenamin's hiring as the new head football coach Thursday afternoon.

This is McMenamin's second head coaching job. He led the Wayne State (NE) program for two years during the COVID-19 pandemic, posting a 7-4 record with wins over nationally-ranked NSIC foes Minnesota State and Minnesota Duluth.

He left Wayne State to become the co-offensive coordinator, passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Tulane University from December 2021 through July 2023. McMenamin helped the Green Wave turn a 2-10 record into a 10-2 mark and Cotton Bowl win over Southern California.

Prior to Wayne State, McMenamin was the offensive coordinator at Central Missouri for five seasons, guiding the Mules to the top of the MIAA ranks in many offensive categories. He also coached two-time Harlon Hill Trophy finalist Brook Bolles.

McMenamin was a two-time NCAA Division II National Champion as quarterback at Northwest. He received First Team All-MIAA honors in 2002, and still holds the program record for most passing yards in a single-game with 473 against UCM. For his career, he threw for 6,225 yards and 48 touchdowns.

A date for a formal media conference introducing McMenamin as the new Northwest head coach has not yet been announced.
