St. Pius X High School will no longer be a member of the Midland Empire Conference in football after the 2024 season.

The news, first reported by Spectrum News Kansas City, comes after a league meeting on Wednesday.

St. Pius X AD Vince Armilio confirmed the report in an e-mail to KXCV-KRNW.

The Warriors do plan to remain in the league for other sports, but said that will be up to the conference.

"We will not be playing the MEC football schedule next year, but I had told the conference we still would like to be in the conference in 2025 for all other sports," Armilio said via e-mail. "That is a decision for the conference to make, but our discussion yesterday was just for football."

The move leaves six member schools playing football within the league.

The Warriors joined the MEC in 2018 as a replacement for Smithville. The St. Pius X football team jumped from Class 3 in 2023 to Class 5 in 2024. Five of the six remaining MEC football teams are Class 3. Savannah is the lone Class 4 program in the conference, but the Savages played at the Class 3 level as recently as 2022.

The MEC had no comment on the situation at this time.
