MO officials calling for stricter biosecurity measures

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - State officials are urging strict biosecurity measures in Missouri poultry operations to prevent the spread of bird flu. The virus has been confirmed in commercial poultry flocks in five southwestern counties.

The Missouri Department of Agriculture has suspended all poultry and waterfowl auctions, shows, and swap meets in affected areas.

Officials warn that the virus spreads through saliva, nasal secretions, and feces of infected birds, with wild migratory birds acting as primary carriers.

Experts recommend poultry owners take precautions, including keeping domestic birds away from wild birds, disinfecting footwear, and avoiding shared tools with other farms.

Signs of infection include decreased water or feed consumption, respiratory symptoms, and sudden flock deaths.

While the public health risk remains low, authorities emphasize that poultry meat and eggs from USDA-inspected sources are safe if handled and cooked properly.

Anyone suspecting bird flu in their flock should contact the Missouri Department of Agriculture’s Animal Health Division.
