ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - A shoplifting attempt at a Price Chopper on North Belt Highway in St. Joseph escalated into an officer-involved shooting.

According to the St. Joseph Police Department, an officer attempted to arrest a suspected shoplifter around 9:47 p.m. last Friday when a male accomplice arrived in a white vehicle, pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the officer.

In response, the officer fired their weapon, but the suspects fled the scene in the vehicle. Police believe no one was injured, but the suspects remain at large as investigators work to identify them.

Due to the officer-involved shooting, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control has taken over that portion of the investigation. The case remains under investigation by St. Joseph police.
