DES MOINES, Iowa - Iowa’s drought conditions remained mostly stable despite a dry January, according to the latest Water Summary Update from state agencies.
The U.S. Drought Monitor shows 86% of the state is experiencing abnormally dry conditions or worse, down about 7% since November.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says January saw just above a quarter of an inch of precipitation, over half an inchbelow normal.
However, above-average rainfall in November and December helped prevent worsening drought conditions. Currently, about 62% of Iowa is in moderate drought or worse, with only one-point-three percent in severe drought.
Looking ahead, forecasts suggestwestern Iowa is expected to see normal levels.
