JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Department of Agriculture is celebrating National Weights and Measures Week, recognizing efforts to ensure fairness in commercial transactions statewide.
The event, observed throughout this week, commemorates the signing of the first U.S. weights and measures law in 1799.
Missouri’s Weights, Measures, and Consumer Protection Division oversees various programs that maintain accuracy and safety in commerce.
These include testing grocery store scales, fuel pumps, and moisture meters, ensuring fuel quality, and regulating egg and milk pricing.
The division also manages land survey records and helps restore lost section corners in Missouri’s public land survey system.
Director Jimmy Williams says the division plays a crucial role in everyday transactions, from buying fuel to determining property boundaries.
