Open burning allowed in St. Joseph during April and November

For St. Joseph residents, open burning of dry yard waste is allowed within the city limits twice a year, during the months of April and November. Health Educator and Public Information Officer with the City of St. Joseph Health Department, Stephanie Malita says there are several guidelines for residents to follow...

"For that period, we are loooking at just yard waste, so no building materials or scrap lumber. Yard waste is all that we allow. People can burn during the hours of 8am to 6pm", Malita says.

All fires must be in an upright container with a volume equal to no more than 55 gallons, typically the size of a 55-gallon drum, constructed of wire mesh or something similar to chicken wire. Malita says it's important to be on sight monitoring fires with a garden hose and staying up-to-date with local media...

Malita says, "Pay attention to local media, we will anounce that on the facebook page and things like that. If there are high winds, just know it is likely that open burning will be cancelled for the day."
