Open Enrollment could be a reality for schools in Missouri in the near future.
House Bill 711 was passed by the House of Representatives earlier this month...and is now in the hands of the senate.
If approved by the senate, school districts across Missouri would be required to accept a state policy into its board policy regarding open enrollment.
Districts would have the choice to opt in and accept additional students from other districts.
Hurdles for schools opting in include growing class sizes and accommodating individualized education plans, or IEPs, through federal funds.
Maryville School District assistant superintendent Philip Pohren believes House Bill 711 could become a reality this time around.
"It could be one of those that for the first time in several years, it actaually does go through and pass, but for schools there is still going to be some control as to how we maniupulate the information given to us and how we want to accept enrollment during that enrollment piece." says Pohren.
If passed, students that transfer would still have the mandated 365 day wait period before they could participate in sports.
We will have more with Philip Pohren today at 9am and again at 6pm on Spoofhound Spotlight.
