Postal workers are rallying to protect union jobs and oppose privatization of the U.S Postal Service

Missouri postal workers are joining thousands nationwide, rallying to protect union jobs and oppose privatization of the U.S Postal Service. In a recent letter to Congress, Postmaster General Louis DeJoy announced plans to cut ten thousand postal service jobs, while President Trump proposed merging the Postal Service with private shippers under the Commerce Department. President of the American Postal Workers Union Local 8 in St. Louis, Bill Brady says privatizing the Postal Service would be the end of reliable mail deliver, among other things.

"It would destroy over six hundred thousand good union jobs. Some of these are actually retired veterans. The U.S. Postal Service is the countires largest civilization employer of veterans, so that would definitly be detrimental.", says Brady.

The Missouri Farm Bureau warns postal changes could hurt rural economies, especially agriculture, which relies on timely mail. A recent Wells Fargo report pushed for privatization of the Postal Service. President of the American Postal Workers Union, Mark Dimondstein, calls privatization a smoking gun. He argues the bank is after financial gains. He adds privatization could raise shipping rates, benefitting UPS, FedEX, and Wells Fargo's investments.

"Wells Fargo report talks about packages having to go up between thirty and one hundred fourty percent if they can pull off this privatization, so they're very excited. The people of this country should be very concerned.", says Dimondstein.

Lawmakers remain divided on how to address the Postal Services's one hundred billion dollar losses, with some advocating for government aid, and others pushing for structural reforms.
