Missouri State Senators are making their way through the 12th week of the 2025 legislative session. One of the bills discussed on the floor this week is Senate Bill 223. Senator Mary Elizabeth Coleman of Arnold says her bill seeks to establish provisions relating to student surveys.
"This bill is trying to create an opportunity for people to follow existing law.", says Coleman.
The bill says a school would have to notify parents at least 24 hours before giving students specific types of surveys. Certain survey questions are covered by the federal Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment.
During discussion on the floor, Senator Maggie Nurrenbern of Kansas City told Coleman she worries about unintended consequences.
"As i have shared with you, I don't want to do anything that is going to bring additional or any fear that teachers or sponsors may have of additional suits.", Nurrenbern says.
Senate Bill 223 has been set aside for future consideration.
