Even though the Trump Administration has put a freeze on funding the Institute of Museum and Library Services, which administers federal grants to state, local and academic libraries, many libraries around the region are celebrating National Library Week. Director of the St. Joseph Library, Mary Beth Revels, says one program in Missouri could be impacted by the freeze.
"For us in Missouri, we have a state wide courier system that relies on federal funding so libraries are worried about that. How are we going to economically transfer materials from all over the state from one library to another?", says Revels.
Revels says most libraries in Missouri are primarily funded by local tax revenue with small libraries being impacted the most by federal cuts.
Revels adds the St. Joseph Library System is seeing a surge in patrons taking advantage of services they offer.
"As the economy weakens, the library usage always increases. We are still finding that more and more people are returning to us from the pandemic even though that was five years ago.", says Revels.
National Library Week runs through Saturday.
