Missouri communities can now apply for the new Blue Shield designation, a recognition program launched by Governor Mike Kehoe aimed at strengthening public safety and supporting law enforcement across the state.
The Blue Shield Program is part of the governor’s Safer Missouri initiative, announced on his first day in office. Cities, counties, and towns that earn the Blue Shield designation will gain access to state grants for law enforcement training and equipment.
The program is designed to highlight and support communities that are making investments in crime reduction and officer support. The state is planning to make $10 million in grant funding available to help Blue Shield communities.
The Maryville City Council recently approved a request by the Public Safety Department to take part in the program. Interim City Manager Ryan Heiland says this a great opportunity for the Maryville Police Department.
"Certainly appreciate our officers. Chief Mike Stolte for recognizing the opportunity to be able to become a part of this program and take advantage of future grant funding to purchase equiptment for the police department.", says Heiland.
According to a release from the Missouri Governor's office, communities are encouraged to apply early, as grant funding could begin rolling out as soon as July—pending approval by the General Assembly.
