Some Northwest international students have had their visas revoked

A number of international students at Northwest Missouri State University have been impacted by recent actions taken by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. The federal agency has begun terminating the legal status of some students, a move that has been widely reported in national media.

Northwest Media Relations Specialist, Mark Hornickel says that over the past week Northwest officials became aware of 43 students affiliated with the university who have had their visas revoked.

"However, only five of those individuals are current students. Two of those five are going to be graduating from Northwest, this spring. The other 38 students are actually Optional Practical Training students. That means they have alrady graduated from Northwest but they are still in the country for employment reasons on F1 visas.", says Hornickel.

Northwest President Dr Lance Tatum in an email to school employees stated the university’s International Involvement Center is actively working with affected students to provide guidance and support. However, due to the nature of the visa revocations, students are being advised to leave the United States immediately to avoid accruing unlawful presence.

University officials continue to monitor international student statuses through the Student Exchange Visitor Information System.
