Special awareness event at the Trail Theatre in St. Joseph to educate the public on the local impact of fentanyl

Today is National Fentanyl Awareness Day, and the City of St. Joseph Health Department, along with the Buchanan County Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention, is inviting the community to a special awareness event at the Trail Theater.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for Free Movie Tuesday, featuring the film Beautiful Boy—a true story of a family's experience with addiction. The movie begins at 7:00, following short presentations about the local impact of fentanyl and a quick demonstration on how to use naloxone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses.

This event is designed to educate the public about the growing presence of fentanyl in street drugs and its deadly consequences. In 2023, nearly 2,000 Missourians died from overdoses—many involving fentanyl, a synthetic opioid that can be lethal even in tiny amounts. The FDA reports that 42% of fake pills tested contain a potentially deadly dose.

Resource tables will offer information on how to talk to teens about drug risks, identify hidden dangers, access support services, and receive free naloxone.
