Falls City, Nebraska, in the state's southeast corner, is looking to overhaul it's school facilities to better serve students and increase efficiency. District Superintendant Tim Heckenlively says the district hopes to put seventh through twelfth graders all under the same roof.
"We're looking at the concept of a Junior-Senior High. Currently we have four individual buildings, Falls City Senior High being one, Falls City Middle School, and two elementary sites.", says Heckinlively.
The district may be able to consolidate some of those building, and reconfigure different grades. The firm BVH Architecture is helping the district analyze possible consolidations as part of its Master Facility Planning Process, says Heckenlively.
"What we're finding so far is that it would lend itself very readily to the high school but then when we look at the use of the other three buildings, there is definitely some challenges,", says Heckinlively.
Those challenges include providing age appropriate playground facilities, access for disabled individuals, and classroom organization. Heckenlively notes the conclusions of the planning process are still unclear. Eventually, a report will provide the district with a number of options, and the school board will decide whether to overhaul its structure or keep its current facilities as they are.
