Krug Park is beloved by many in the city of St. Joseph.

"Most people of St. Joe kind of consider that as the crown jewel of our enormous park system we have here in town. It is in dire need of a face lift.", says City Parks and Recreation Director, Jeff Atkins.

The City of St. Joseph announced last week that work would begin on a twelve million dollar renovation to the park's facilities next Monday, June 2nd. The comprehensive update will touch every corner of the park., it's walking paths, bathrooms, ampitheatre, and the iconic castle which has stood unfinished at the center of the park since construction on it began in the year 1922. The work will take two to three years to complete. Atkins says residents can still access the park during that time, even if they notice changes.

"For example, the first phases that we will be starting on won't be closing the park in anyway but will affect the park use.", says Atkins.

St. Joseph voters approved a sales tax specifically for maintaining city parks back in 2021. The tax will now fund the roughly twelve million dollar project taking place at Krug.

Atkins says, "We've never had this type of money to address the physical needs of our facilities. Not in the history of parks system have we had this type of money strictly for the maintence of our facilities and it is a game changer".

The funds are having a real impact says Atkins.

" It is by far the biggest project that I have been involved with in this department in my fourty years being here.", says Atkins.

They city will still produce it's beloved holiday park festivities durng construction. You can follow updates at krugparkproject.com
