Maryville City Council has in place temporary ban on all new modular homes to update its codes

Modular and factory-built homes, constructed elsewhere and installed on a building site, are becoming increasingly popular in many municipalities across the country. last week, the City of Maryville moved to regulate manufactured homes, clarifying language in its zoning laws about where those homes are approproate and how they should be installed. In January, the City Council placed a moratorium - a temporary ban - on all new modular homes in the city in order to update its codes.

The city now diferentiates between manufactured, mobile, and modular homes, and restricts the location for such projects. Moving forward, new manufactured homes are only allowed in industrial districts in the city; in areas geared toward apartments and multi-family housing, they are allowed with special approval from the City Council and its Planning Commission. A number of rules regulate the appearence of factory-built homes, and their integration into a surrounding neighborhood.

The new rules tighten the use of these structures within city limits and open up opportunities for community and public input. The moratrium is now lifted, so those wishing to install a pre-made unit can now bring their plans to city.
