SNAP is continuing to serve the unique challenges and opportunities in our region

Help is available for those struggling to feed their families or afford their grocery bills in Missouri. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP, or Food Stamps, serves roughly a tenth of the state population, about 650,000 people. The Missouri State University Extension Office offers programs and classes across the state to educate residents about local foods, nutrition, and how to get the most out of a run to the grocery store.
Doctor Jo Britt-Rankin works across the state on nutrition education programs, and says the rural communtities in our northwest region have both unique challenges and opportunities.
In addition to gardening, Britt-Rankin says focusing on foods that are in-season and available locally can actually lead to savings. Some farmer's markets in the state accept SNAP as a form of payment.
Congressional action currently being considered may reduce funding for food stamps. But Britt-Rankin says extension offices remain committed to connecting struggling families with resources.
