Swimming season is not far off, and a new pool may be coming to the city of St. Joseph. While it will not be ready for this summer, sweaty city residents can hold out hope for a pool facility in the coming years. This after the City Council voted last week to enter a partnership with the St Joseph YMCA to construct an indoor acquatic center on the Y's campus. The plans currently entail a 50-meter pool for recreational swimming and competition, and a separate wellness pool heated to a higher tyemperature, for gentle exercise and thereaputic uses.
The entire facility would cost over 30 million dollars. The YMCA has raised 8 million towards the project. Last week, the City Council pledged 7 million of its own dollars towards the public facility, along with roughly a quarter million to be contributed annually for upkeep.
The city currently manages an outdoor acquatic park, but there is no lap pool at the facility. The Council approved the 7 million contribution on its first reading, and will revisit the plan for a final vote at its May 27th meeting.
