The catch and keep season for black bass in the Show-Me State opens this weekend. On Saturday, May 24th Missouri anglers with a valid fishing permit can harvest Black Bass and its various subspecies, including large and small mouth bass, from all state waterways. The season will stay open through February of 2026.
In most northern areas of the state Bass harvest is legal year-round; begining Saturday, the harvest area will extend state-wide.
Additionally, the Missouri Department of Conservation is announcing the opening of squirrel hunting season, also on May 24th. Archery, sling-shots, and cage-style traps are all fair methods of hunting the creatures. A permit is required and the daily harvest is limited to twenty rodents.
For those looking to supplement their Memorial Day banquet, the Department of Conservation has squirrel recipes on its website - from fried, to stewed with dumplings, to baked in a pot pie.
