The Missouri Supreme court passed a decision to temporarily block abortion access in the state
A ruling by the Missouri Supreme Court this week is further complicating abortion access in the state. The Court passed down a decision Tuesday temporarily blocking abortion access in the state, by reversing the actions of a lower court. The ruling relates to the passage of Amendment 3, the voter initiative which put abortion access into the state constitution this November. Following that vote, Planned Parenthood sued the state, requesting that Missouri lift laws restricting abortion access in order to fulfill the wishes of voters as laid out in Amendment 3. A judge initially sided with Planned Parenthood, but the State Supreme Court, in this week's ruling, overturned the decision of that lower court. Planned Parenthood clinics in Missouri paused operations in response to the court's ruling. Amendment 3 has come under pressure from state lawmakers as well. During their legislative session, they drafted their own constitutional amendment to send to voters, likely in 2026. Written as a replacement to Amendment 3, it restricts abortion in many cases. The northwest region's State Representative Jeff Farnan says he's in favor of the plan. The legislature's proposal does allow for abortions in some cases, says Farnan.Overall, the proposed amendment would be much more limited than Amendment 3. The issue could come before voters in 2026. Between the legislative efforts and the latest court rulings, abortion access is likely to remain uncertain in the state, despite voter approval.
