Alarming statistics reveal high rates of alcohol misuse among women

As Women's Health Month comes to an end, experts are discussing alcohol consumption. Research from 2021 and 2022 shows that more than 1 in 5 women ages 18 to 44 in Missouri report periods of heavy drinking. This raises the risks of organ damage, cancer, and complications pregnancy throughout a woman's life.

Founder of Simmering Center Recovery Housing, Merna Eppick emphasizes that statistics on women and alcohol misuse may not be the full story as many women suffer in silence.

Research shows that women face greater social fallout, relationship stress, and social stigma related to alcohol misuse than their male peers.

The patterns are concerning amongst younger women and girls as well. A 2019 survey found nearly 1 in 3 high school girls reported heavy drinking, compared to one in four boys.
