Chillicothe proudly proclaims itself the "Home of Sliced Bread," and this weekend the town gets to celebrate that slice of history with a day of festivities.
The city's Tourism Director Amy Supple says the history of Sliced Bread dates back to a collaboration that took place at the Chillicothe Baking Company.
Following that success in Chillicothe, Rohwedder took his invention to bakeries across the Midwest. A competing bread slicer was soon invented in St. Louis by Gustav Papendick, and then, in 1930, Wonder Bread hit supermarket shelves, sending sliced bread nationwide.
Remembering its humble roots at the Chillicothe Baking Company, the city "toasts" its history each summer, and this year the city's "Sliced Bread Day" is June 7th. The day features Trolley Tours, a 5k race, live music, and a bread baking contest hosted by the Grand River Museum.
“They judge that bread based on multiple factors like taste, appearance, and slice ability, so it is very fun.”, says Supple.
