Heat index values have reached the triple digits

Heat Advisory

It certainly was a hot one last weekend. The National Weather Service issued its first extreme heat advisory of the summer, spanning from Friday all the way into Monday evening. Forecaster at the Weather Service's Pleasant Hill Office Alex Kroll said temperatures in the nineties were matched by high humidity.

He said, "As a result of that, the heat index values, the 'feels-like temperatures,' reached the triple digits - sometimes topping out right around 105, 106, degrees Fahrenheit."

Kroll says the nights stayed hot, with temperatures remaining as high as 80.

He adds, "and when that happens that does not provide a lot of relief, especially for residents in buildings without air-conditioning available."

The heat event is moving over the eastern US this week, hitting major urban areas on the Atlantic Coast. While the temperatures recorded this weekend are certainly above average, they are not unheard for Missouri as summer gets underway. With that in mind, Kroll said it is important to be safe during the state's hottest months.

"When you're outdoors keep yourself hydrated, take breaks, and look out for anyone who may be vulnerable to excessive heat or humidity.", he says.

The forecast calls for some relief later this week, but only by a few degrees: expects highs around ninety in the coming days. Keep an eye on the forecast, and stay tuned to KXCV: some storms moving through the region could become severe.
