Once you see them, they're everywhere. Splattered dark blue on the sidewalk and rolling down the gully in the rain. The mulberries are out in the streets of Northwest and they are as usual, abundant.
Gavin, our News Director, has decided to go out and forage for mulberries in his neighborhood park and give them a try. He gathered half of a pint and sat out to learn more about his miniature harvest. He reached out to Ginger Miller with the Missouri Department Conservation and she says that they are native to the state and delicious. She encourages you to look for trees with spade shaped leaves. The berries will grow in clusters and look like blackberries. They can be put in smoothies, muffins, pancakes, cookies, etc.
Miller remembers how she had a garden when she was young and she mentions how she realizes how fourtunate she was in her youth to have the access to the garden and the knowledge it provided.
