Recent closures of shooting ranges at Pigeon Hill Conservation Area

Damage to regulation signs at Pigeon Hill Conservation Area

The Missouri Department of Conservation is providing more information around the closure of shooting ranges at Pigeon Hill Conservation Area. The area is located south of St Joseph, and has popular unstaffed gun ranges. Recently the department closed those facilities due to evidence of unsafe shooting practices.

The Department's Shooting Range Coordinator Justin McGuire said "Unfortunately, irresponsible shooting range users created a situation that we could not allow to persist,” The department had intially tried posting signs and patroling the site more regularly, but the problems persisted. Firearms have been discharged at signs, bathroom facilities, and other targets outside the range, causing damage to infrastructure and endangering other park users.

The department is invesitgating the situation, and welcomes any information from the public. The rest of the Pigeon Hill Area remains open to recreators during the closure of the gun ranges.
